The Clockwork Whale

Every evening, a strange ticking drifted across the harbour. Most people blamed the old lighthouse clock. But twins Sam and Noor noticed something curious: the ticking moved. One night, they followed it to the end of the pier, where an enormous shape rose from the water.

It was a whale made of copper and blue metal. Warm light shone through round windows in its sides. “Excuse me,” it whispered. “Have you seen my song?” Noor blinked. “How do you lose a song?” The whale explained that it had spent so long keeping perfect time that it had forgotten how to sing.

Sam tapped a wooden post. Noor clapped twice. The whale listened, then added a gentle click. Soon the pier was alive with an uneven, wonderful rhythm. A low, warm note rolled across the sea. The whale laughed. “That is not my old song.” “Perhaps,” Noor said, “it is your new one.” For the first time in a hundred years, the harbour clock was a little late.
